Cannon Beach |

I've said it before and I will say it again; the Pacific Northwest is having some funky weather patterns. Although this time, I was planning on taking advantage of it with a quick family trip to the beach. Backpacking was in the back of my mind, but as Johnny and I were recovering from a cold that was rather persistent, I did not want to push the little man or myself.
The day was perfect, so that leaves very little opportunity for filler. Seriously, we drove into downtown Cannon Beach and found parking at the steps leading to the sand. This is not happened to me in my lifetime. At least, not on a day like this. The kids said they were hungry so we walked one block to a cute little cabin-like family restaurant and had a homemade breakfast before heading to the beach. Cheap prices, good food, and no waiting due to the lack of human beings, was overwhelming.
The kids hit the beach and it was all theirs. Not only was there a lack of people, but a complete lack of the common wind you get this time of year.
Just kids ran off and I got the opportunity to think with the only interruption being the pleasant crashing of the waves as the temperature was nearing the upper 50s. Since it was the last half hour before low tide, I shouted and pointed towards Haystack Rock, and it's tide pools.
The kids raced towards the tide pools with hope in their hearts for something interesting to be found. I had a hard time keeping up, but was not really in a hurry.
Along the route to the pools, Johnny wanted a few cheesy photos of happiness before wanting to prove his worth against the waves.
He won all but one battle.
We reached the pools just as it was hitting low tide. Perfection.
Of course, Amber had to catch a fish and was quite proud of her speed and finesse.
Hermit crabs were abundant, but, surprisingly, Johnny wanted to hold one as well. He was so excited to see it try desperately to escape his hands without pinching.
Amber was in heaven with so much life to explore.
Johnny was in heaven for too many things to mention on this page alone.
The day went on and on. I was simply relaxed and, like the flotsam on the waves, just drifting along with the tide. Amber wanted to head to the dry sand for some play time, so I waddled behind them and had a sit. The warmth from the sun overwhelmed me and I had to lie down. Somewhere in between lying down and looking up to see the kinds frolicking like horses, I must have dozed off as time had sped up, making it that time to leave. On the way out, which took a half an hour just to get out of downtown, I watched people arrive in droves, yelling, honking, flipping others off, and I just smiled for us having such a perfect day.
