Halloween
October 31, 2009

Halloween was here and the kids were giddy with anticipation.  To a parent, this meant wandering around the known-neighborhood, trying desperately to keep up with the sugar-seeking little ones as they made their way from house to house.  Being the single parent I am, I did not have luxury of wandering for long as someone still had to dish out candy from our own doorstep before the crowds dispersed.

The first event was the ceremonial carving of the pumpkins.  Johnny wanted the traditional happy-to-be-alive-for-a-week pumpkin mug , while Amber went for a more menacing grimace.  After the carving, it was time to make some cookies, but just not any cookies.

I had made some sugar cookie cold-rolled dough that turned out spectacular.  When I told the kids it was time to roll, cut, bake, and decorate, they gave a whoop before running in circles.  And this was before any sugar-enduced hyperactivity!

No matter how hard I tried, I could not get them to decorate the dozen that was made.  Right after the pastry bag was emptied, and the sprinkles put on ever so carefully, the individual cookie, so beautifully garnished, was devoured.

With the pumpkins carved and lit, the cookies made, and the costumes donned, it was time to roll.  Clear skies and mild temperatures meant a fun night out.  In all my years, I could not remember when the weather was this good for trick-or-treating.  In a mere 45 minutes the children had filled their buckets to the rim.  With full buckets, they waddled home before passing out sugary coma inducing yum-yums until 9:30 while watching scary movies.  Ahh, to be young again.
